The Chews Lane Development in central Wellington is a modern mixed use building that includes 90 apartments, office space for 600 workers, 16 retail and entertainment tenancies and over 200 carparking spaces. The project incorporated refurbishment of an existing commercial building as well as construction of new buildings, all interconnected.
The scale of the project and the number of buildings involved meant that each could not be treated in isolation. Furthermore, a large number of leases, land titles and unit titles were to be established, all needing specific design for egress and spread of fire.
Holmes Fire provided fire engineering design for the entire development to:
- Determine the optimal interlinking of the egress for the various buildings, resulting in minimised space occupied by egress corridors and stairs;
- Establish the site-wide strategy for the fire alarm systems; and
- Provide architectural freedom to achieve the project team’s vision.
